Abstracthiphop is a music genre that combines elements of hip hop with experimental and avant-garde sounds. It is characterized by unconventional production techniques, abstract and surrealistic lyrical content, and use of samples from a wide range of sources.
The origins of abstracthiphop can be traced back to the early 2000’s when rappers began experimenting with a different style of rap. The style eschews many of the conventions of conventional hip-hop, including braggadocio and everyday problems, and instead focuses on more abstract ideas such as existentialism or social institutions.
Lyrical content is usually more extensive and metaphorical than that of conventional hip-hop, often avoiding the more upfront language and focusing on larger themes. This can lead to more complex and layered music, especially when it comes to the sound of the beats.
Musically, these artists tend to use unconventional beats and often feature samples from a variety of sources, such as jazz, soul, and electronic music. This can make the music more eclectic and avant-garde, though most Abstract hip hop artists are still influenced by traditional Hip Hop.
Some of the best examples of this style of music can be found in the works of artists such as Earl Sweatshirt. His debut album, Some Rap Songs, is a fantastic example of this style as it expresses great emotional depth and vulnerability through the use of jazz samples.
This album is a good start for someone new to abstract hip hop as it has a very cryptic lyrical style and uses some very unconventional beats. However, this album can be quite dark at times with lyrics such as “I’m a slave to my mind” and instrumentals that feel very aggressive.
